The Medical Academy is an academic program designed to integrate the core curriculum (English, Social Science, and Science) with a focus on careers in health science and medical technology. The academy has four specific paths that fall under either Patient Care or Healthcare Administrative Services.
In the Patient Care pathway, students will be exposed to standards that apply to occupations or functions involved in the prevention of mental and physical well-being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professions. In the Health Care Administrative Services pathway students will learn about the occupations that support the process of patient care such as site administrators, managers, attorneys, receptionists, secretaries, billing and coding specialists, health informatics technicians, accountants and more. Health care administrative workers are the invisible backbone of health care; without appropriately skilled workers in these fields, health care systems simply could not function.
The Medical Academy is a sequential course that builds upon itself so it is only open to incoming freshmen and incoming sophomores. Space is limited so students will need to apply to be a part of the Medical Academy. The application will be open from January 20th, 2020 through January 31st, 2020. Spots are prioritized by those that live in the Hanford West boundary. If more applicants exceed space, a lottery of those that live outside the Hanford West boundary will be conducted to determine who will be placed in the academy.
