American Sign Language (ASL) 1


Course Description:
This is an introduction to ASL, the language used by the majority of Deaf Americans. Not only will you learn about ASL as a language, you will also look into its community of users. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to hold a basic conversation in ASL about common life situations without using his/her voice while using correct facial expressions and ASL grammar. In addition, students will be able to fingerspell clearly and receptively understand beginning level fingerspelling, identify the parameters of ASL, and use classifiers to provide visual concepts to his/her signing. Furthermore, students will be able to demonstrate awareness of cultural nuances and identify significant movements in Deaf history. These objectives will be achieved through various activities, demonstrations, role-play, media, and small group interaction.
