Medical Academy

Hanford West Medical Academy

Our mission is to prepare students who have an interest in the health sciences to successfully pursue higher learning and a profession in an ever-changing world. We focus on student-centered learning; provide experiences that motivate all students; provide a rigorous and technologically enhanced curriculum; and inspire creative, critical, and analytical thinking.

The Medical Academy is an academic program composed of two Patient Care pathways and one Healthcare Administrative Services pathway. Students may also choose to pursue multiple pathways through an online independent study program within the Medical Lab class setting.

In the Patient Care pathways, students will be exposed to standards that apply to occupations or functions involved in the preservation of mental and physical well-being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professions.

In the Health Care Administrative Services pathway, students will learn about the occupations that support the process of patient care, such as site administrators, managers, receptionists, billing and coding specialists, health informatics technicians, accountants and more.

Each pathway provides opportunities for students to experience work-based learning opportunities including job shadowing, interview preparation, guest speakers, and internships.

Each pathway within the Medical Academy is comprised of a sequence of courses that build upon the previous course. Therefore, the Medical Academy is only open to incoming 9th and 10th grade students. Space is limited, so students will need to apply to be a part of the Medical Academy. The application window is open from January 20th, 2025 to January 31st, 2025. Priority is given to students living within the Hanford West boundaries. If the academy receives more applicants from outside of Hanford West than there are seats available, a lottery will be conducted to determine who will be placed in the academy.
