- Foggy Day Schedules are announced on a day-to-day basis.
It is the responsibility of the HJUHSD Transportation Department to decide whether or not to call a foggy day schedule for Hanford High, Hanford West High, Sierra Pacific High and Earl F. Johnson High. The transportation department makes that decision based on a number of factors, including input from other local school transportation departments and observation of outlying areas.
Because of the nature of our Valley fog, this can be a difficult decision to make: It is often foggy in one area while clear in another, fog can shift from one area to another quickly or can clear up just minutes after the call is made. But the key factor in making the decision to call a foggy day schedule is the safety of the students we transport. The question that the transportation department must answer is whether or not - at the time the determination is made - visibility is impaired to the extent that it may present a hazard to our students riding the buses. Once a foggy day schedule is called, it cannot be reversed.
It is also important for parents and students to understand that, regardless of whether or not HJUHSD buses or classes will be delayed or canceled because of fog, individual families can and should make their own decisions about whether or not it is safe to drive to school on a foggy morning. Students who are late to school because of legitimate safety concerns about fog are not penalized. They will be granted an excused absence for the missed school time and the opportunity to make up missed work, just like any other excused absence. Parents/Guardians are requested to clear all such excused absences on the same day as the missed school time, by phone or in writing, in keeping with HJUHSD Attendance Policies.

Private Transportation to School Activities
-
If you are planning to use a limousine or party bus service for transportation to or from a school activity, please ensure the vehicle and driver have the required licensing as a certified School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB). California (AB 830) requires limousine companies, charter-party carriers and other school transportation companies to have a specific permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles and drivers to have specific additional training to be legally allowed to transport students to or from school activities. The California Highway Patrol will impound SPAB vehicles caught transporting school kids without valid SPAB licenses, and the company may face additional fines. Anyone in the vehicle during impoundment will have to arrange his or her own transportation.
